This was my big project this Christmas. I have been wanting to make it for a couple years now and have had the bag of t-shirts hanging around the house, slowly growing larger and larger. So I made up my mind that this was it and sat down one night in November and started cutting the t-shirts and making stacks of squares, around 6 to 8 inches each, totally sloppy, no even edges or anything. THAT part took a long time and was exhausting, but I was able to do it in front of the TV, which is my favorite way to craft, so it was all good. Plus it got the ball rolling for the project.
I sewed the squares together into six foot long scarf-like strips and then started sewing those together to make one big piece, approximately six by nine feet. Perfection was not an option here, the idea of the blanket was to have something very homemade that a groovy college girl would love.
Bryan found me a HUGE needle in his vintage tools from his grandfather that was for sewing sails and things like that that are massive. It was like a super long sharp tapestry needle and it went thru the layers with ease, dragging the yarn behind it. I know he was nervous that I'd stab myself with it. Look at the size of this thing!
Putting the front and back together was the hardest part, especially considering it was like four days before Christmas and I was REALLY wanting to get this project done!!! I had made the back out of t-shirts as well with the intention to add batting in between, but the thing was so heavy that I thought she'd suffocate if she laid under the thing. I called it the lead x-ray blanket. So instead I ditched the batting and the back and opted for a colorful sheet instead. Bryan laid on it on the floor in the basement holding it down so I could pin it and I never did get it quite straight, but once the yarn ties went in, holding the front and back together where I wanted it to, I couldn't have been happier!
She loved it and wrapped herself up in it and stayed that way all of Christmas Eve. Mom has a photo of that, I'll try to get a copy and add it to this post.
ACK! I'm totally behind on posting and you KNOW I'm busy as heck considering it's 2 days before Christmas! I've been working on all kinds of things that of course I can't really mention, but I took some pictures of my decor that I'll put up shortly! Then I'll highlight some of my creations after I've given them away.
